Closure of Milacron production site at Malterdingen is “imminent”

Major changes are on the way at Milacron, and these will particularly affect its European injection moulding machine business, according to an open letter sent by the company to its customers and signed by Tom Goeke, CEO of Milacron LLC.

Writing that ‘ultimately, we had to do what was right for our company’, the letter confirms that the production site at Malterdingen, Germany, will be shut down.

Previously, in March 2016, Milacron announced that the site would be shuttered by the end of 2017.

However, citing a full European order book to Q1 2018, the company said in June 2017 that it needed the operational capacity, and would keep Malterdingen open, in all probability until the end of 2019.

That, however, no longer seems likely.

Milacron will continue to have a significant presence in Germany and Europe, however. Despite restructuring injection moulding machine production in Europe, there are no plans to leave the German or the European market.

Moreover, the engineering, research and development, service, sales, marketing and aftermarket departments will remain in the Malterdingen region.  As the letter stresses: “We plan to continue growing in this region.”

To that end, Milacron will be showcasing two new injection moulding machine lines at this year’s Fakuma, in addition to numerous other products from the various product brands.
