Custom molder RL Hudson & Co. buys Rapid Production Tooling

Custom injection molder RL Hudson & Co. LLC has acquired Rapid Production Tooling Inc., an injection mold tooling company based in Berthoud, Colo.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. RL Hudson & Co. President and CEO Rick Von Drehle said no immediate changes to Rapid Production Tooling will be made.

"RPT has an excellent management team, and we look forward to working with them to grow both companies at a faster pace," Von Drehle said in a July 10 email to Plastics News. "The company was employee owned and led by three key managers who founded the company."

Von Drehle said management decided to sell to "enhance future growth opportunities."

Rapid Production Tooling manufactures injection molds, dies, tools, jigs and fixtures used in industrial and commercial applications as well as the medical parts and electronics markets. The company has 38 employees, and all jobs are "intended to be maintained," Von Drehle said.

The injection mold tooling company operates out of a 30,000-square-foot facility with office and manufacturing space and has an array of robotically controlled CNC milling equipment, electrical discharge machining equipment and other toolmaking, finishing and quality inspection equipment.

RL Hudson & Co.'s acquisition of Rapid Production Tooling enables it to expand into the medical parts and electronics markets, and adds clean room molding capabilities to its business.

"The driving force was to buy a leading high-tech injection mold manufacturer to help develop their mold sales as well as adding mold design and manufacturing capabilities to those of RL Hudson," Von Drehle said.

Going forward, RL Hudson & Co., based in Broken Arrow, Okla., plans to boost sales and marketing capabilities for Rapid Production Tooling's medical and electronics unit while further enabling injection molding capabilities through tooling design and production.

Von Drehle said external growth through acquisitions is part of RL Hudson & Co.'s total growth strategy.

"We are always looking for capable companies in the molded rubber and plastics industry that can enhance our capabilities and add to our product offering," he said.

RL Hudson & Co. manufactures custom molded rubber, plastic, hose and assembly components for the medium and heavy-duty truck, marine, agriculture, appliance and industrial equipment industries, among other areas. The custom injection molder has injection presses ranging in size from 85 to more than 500 tons.

RL Hudson & Co., which is owned by founder Richard Hudson, employs 102 and operates out of a 90,000-square-foot facility.
