Molder BMP Medical moves into larger facility

Contract molder BMP Medical, a division of Biomedical Polymers Inc., has moved into a larger manufacturing facility in Sterling, Mass.

The 80,000-square-foot facility houses operations for injection molding, blow molding, two-shot molding and insert molding.

BMP Medical offers custom injection molded medical devices and laboratory supplies such as bottles, scoops, beakers, caps and closures for original equipment manufacturers. The company also offers clean room injection molding and custom packaging, among other services.

BMP Medical previously operated out of a 30,000-square-foot facility in Gardner, Mass., about 20 miles northwest of Sterling. The company still owns the building and is in the process of discussing its use going forward.

Ed Kangas, vice president of sales and marketing at BMP Medical, said growth was the driving force behind the company's move to the larger facility.

"We were getting a little tight from a square footage perspective, so we were kind of busting at the seams," he said in a Feb. 1 phone interview. "The next step to take the business to the next level was to either build a new facility or find an existing facility that was available to move into."

In addition, BMP Medical has invested close to $2 million in equipment upgrades, which include a brand-new chiller system, an entire upgrade of the material handling system and two new 330-ton injection molding machines.

In total, the company has two blow molding machines and 16 injection molding machines. Clamping forces range from 110-330 tons. Kangas said BMP Medical may add another injection press later this year in the 400-ton range and potentially one to two more blow molding machines.

"For us, it's usually project-based," he said of the possible addition of a larger tonnage press.

Parent company Biomedical Polymers, founded in 1978, manufactures various plastic consumables and products for research and medical diagnostic laboratories. The company launched the BMP Medical division in 2016. Companywide, Biomedical Polymers employs more than 70 workers.
